The purification of biomolecules normally uses membrane separations to concentrate and wash feed prior to chromatography. ÄKTAcrossflow™ is a fully automated system for cross flow filtration (ultrafiltration/diafiltration and cell separation) designed for process development and optimization. ÄKTAcrossflow™ is suitable for installation in a lab environment, which reduces the facility and infrastructure expenditure. The benchtop system is compact and has a sanitary design with changeable wetted parts.

UNICORN™ software controls ÄKTAcrossflow™. UNICORN™ has the benefits of one common control platform and user interface for all scales of operation in filtration and chromatography. The scouting feature gives automatic support to process development and optimization. Method wizards and pre-programmed cleaning methods provide a high degree of efficiency in scale-up and production work. UNICORN™ is compatible with all applicable regulations including 21 CFR Part 11.

The system is designed for use with flat sheet cassettes and hollow fibers. A wide range of cross flow devices include MidGee hollow fiber cross flow cartridges for cell harvesting and Kvick Start flat sheet cassettes. The cassettes are available in 40 cm2 and 150 cm2 for ultrafiltration as well as diafiltration process development and require small working volume.
